Tulips and daffodils are peeking out, so it looks like spring has really arrived. We have been hard at work on making our 3rd season better than ever. Applications have been sent out to our previous vendors and we hope to have a great crop for you.

If you haven't received your application via email, just click on the link at the top of this post and you can print out your own.

Our customers have said they especially want cheese and bread, so we are looking for those vendors. If you know a cheese maker or bread baker, please send them an application.

The Commonwealth has a new license for farm wineries to sell at farmers' markets. We hope to have Massachusetts wineries represented on at least a few market days.

ENTERTAINERS WANTED! If you would like to perform at our market, call Tricia Dzuris in the Town Manager's office to get a place on the calendar. 978-250-5201. We have a tent and a sound system. This is a volunteer gig, but you may "pass the hat" (aka put out your guitar case).

Things are gearing up here in Chelmsford for our second season of the Chelmsford Farmers' Market on the Common. We learned a lot from our first year. Paul Cohen, our Town Manager, has put together a team that includes Kim Albert as the Volunteer Coordinator and Joanne Stanway who will be handling our publicity, among others.

HAMES & AXLE will have our soaps, but also goat milk lotion, and some skin creams/balms that we have found helpful throughout the winter. We’ll also be bringing dream pillows, containing herbs, rice and buckwheat hulls. Great stress relievers.

JONES FARM will bring Yellow Squash, Zucchini, Tomatoes, Lettuce, Yellow & Green Beans, Cukes, Green Peppers, Butternut Squash, Corn, Hot Peppers, Kohlrabi, Cantalopes, Basil, Mozarella, Rosemary, Bread, Apples, Peaches, Nectarines, Scallions, Beets, Cut Flowers, Hardy Mums.

GOODIES sells cookies - the chocolate peanut butter munchie was actually featured on the Rachael Ray Show! Folks especially like the cranberry oatmeal, made with dried cranberries, golden raisins, walnuts and a hint of orange zest! Kids, young and old, love our chocolate chip cookies . . . which make wonderful ice cream sandwiches!

JONES FARM'S beautiful stall will have lettuces, carrots, onions, beets, radishes, zephyr, zucchini, yellow zucchini, cousa squash, cut flowers, breads, corn, tomatoes, native peaches and nectarines this week. Green beans and perhaps yellow beans, mozarella, potatoes, basil.

WEEK 4 AND WE'RE STILL GROWING!!

Despite the record breaking rain, Chelmsford Farmers' Market has lucked out in the weather department. No rain from 2-6 pm. (Maybe we should say it is the Camelot Farmers' Market?) Yesterday was our 4th market day of the first season, 8 more to go. Our wonderful vendors brought beautiful produce, bread, pasta, cheese, sauces, bagels, flowers, granola, cookies, pies, and more. Everyone we talked to said they thought they would drop by for one thing and left with brimming bags. How anyone can resist stopping at every stall is beyond me.

More than one shopper has said they bought everything for dinner at the market! How good is that?

Welcome our newest vendors: Hill Orchard (peaches are coming in) and Fior D'Italia (the best fresh pasta around).

Support our local farmers and remember: NO FARMS, NO FOOD

Yesterday we rang the opening bell at 2:00 and welcomed a very happy crowd to the first Chelmsford Farmers' Market on the Common. It was truly spectacular. The Market Organizers (Susan and Peggy) were almost speechless. The vendors/farmers all said it was a great opening day and a couple even said that in their long experience it was the best opening day of any market they have attended. WOW!

After literally weeks of overcast skies and rain we were worried farmers wouldn't have enough to sell, but they did and the variety of heirloom squashes alone was incredible. We were also worried it would rain on the market and discourage shoppers. It turned out to be a great day and people were happy to be out.

I was talking to a friend and said, "This is like a European market." A young woman standing nearby said, "I don't mean to eavesdrop, but I just moved here from Germany and this exactly like a German market."

Over and over people said to us, "This is wonderful!" "Thank you for bringing this to Chelmsford." "I have always wanted a market in my town." etc.

We owe a real debt to the Town Manager for supporting the idea of having a market on the Common from the very beginning. Also, the Board of Health facilitated the permitting process and patiently worked with us, answering questions like, "what is a 'processed food'?"

We basked in our success for one night and got up at 5 am thinking about how to refine things and make the market even better. Keeping the market in the public's mind is crucial. There will be banners going up on the Common, so every driver who comes down North Road will be reminded that Thursday is market day. Both local newspapers, the Chelmsford Independent and the Lowell Sun, had pre-opening stories and came to the opening. Facebook was invaluable for building a customer base too. If you are reading this and have any ideas about how to publicize the market or make it better, please let us know.

We're coming down to the wire and are busy getting things ready for the opening bell on July 9. Bernie Ready is loaning us an antique school bell to ring at 2:00 on market days. Our volunteer list is growing and we have ordered organic T-shirts from Embroideme in Chelmsford printed with the beautiful logo Donna Berger designed for us. Even the printing is with organic dyes!

We will also have buttons for anyone who wants to be a FOUNDING FRIEND of the market. They should be available by the end of the week and will be $10.00. All funds will go to support the market.

Earth Day Fair on the Common

Today is a beautiful sunny day for Town Wide Clean Up and Earth Day on the Town Common. There will be an info table about the market at the Fair, noon to 3:00. We already have NINETY-SIX!!!, Yes 96, friends signed up on facebook. Every time we check there are more, so we know interest is building. We hope to be able to talk to lots of people today who aren't on fb.

Hamburgers

It is raining in buckets and it is greening up in the yard. So we know that besides spring being here according to the calendar, it will be here weather-wise. This means May 1 will be here before we know it. We are starting to check with Town Hall every day to see if any applications have arrived for Chelmsford Farmers' Market stalls. So far we have positive verbal responses from three produce growers, one dairy, one cheese maker, one flower and herb grower/baker, one cookie baker, one bagel maker, one soap maker, and one woodenware maker. We are still hoping for a beekeeper who will sell honey and beeswax products, a bread baker, a potter, and maybe an artisan who makes kitchen and table linens. It will be hard to rest until we are certain we have vendors.

Although we understand that farmers can be a cautious lot, we hope all those verbal "Yays" turn into real applications. Which came first: the chicken or the egg? certainly applies in this situation. We want to be a successful, farmer friendly market, but if we don't get enough vendors because everyone is in the "hmmm...let's wait and see" mode, we can't be successful. We are forging ahead with positive thoughts.

You may wonder what the title of this post, "Hamburgers," has to do with our market. When Susan was a child, her father used to say, "I like rain because I like hamburgers." It took awhile for her to figure out what he meant, but what he was saying was that the cattle who dotted the California hillsides ate grass and without rain there wouldn't be grass, so the cattle wouldn't fatten up. I think you get the point. Farmers are our rain. Without them coming to our market, we can't be successful. We are hopeful our local farmers will see that we want to partner with them to bring healthy, locally grown food to Chelmsford.

Read this Book

The Java Room in Chelmsford is a wonderful place to meet people. While I was waiting for my coffee I noticed the patron in front of me had a gardening book. I asked him if he had heard Chelmsford was going to have a farmers' market. He said he had. I didn't tell him I was one of the people who was organizing it and I was pleased he knew so much which meant the word was getting around. He asked me if I knew about the Community Garden that was starting. He said he already had a large garden himself. We got our coffee, but before I left he said, "You should read a book I just read. It is called ON GOOD LAND and is about an urban garden in California. I know the book is at the library because I just returned it."

Everyone should read this book. It is by Michael Ableman and the Chelmsford Public Library has it in its collection. It is about the fight to save a small farm being encroached upon by sprawl in Goleta, California. As a native Californian I remember when Goleta was what my grandfather called "a wide place in the road." By 1998 it had become an example of rampant building with no, or little thought, to maintaining agricultural land. I like open space as much as the next person, but what I really worry about is agricultural land. The thought of importing all of our food is very scary and certainly not green. ON GOOD LAND is short, only 144 pages including lots of photos, and to the point.

I commend it to anyone who eats...

It's not just about food...

Becoming a Locavore isn't just about serving your family fresh healthy food. It isn't just about helping the local economy. It is also about saving our planet and being a good shepherd for our children.

"Consider this: If each of us living in the U.S. ate just one meal a week (breakfast, lunch or dinner) using food that was locally grown and pesticide-free, we would reduce our national oil consumption by more than 1.1 million barrels of oil — every single week."

Who knew that eating locally would be patriotic? We're only talking about one meal a week, so if everyone in Chelmsford came to the Chelmsford Farmers' Market every Thursday this summer and purchased produce for one meal, they would be helping to reduce our dependency on oil.

Hi Folks:

Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 8:30 pm, I am taking part in Earth Hour - a global event in which millions of people will turn out their lights to make a statement of concern about our planet and climate change. I want to invite you to join, too! Sponsored by World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour got started just two years ago and is now the largest event of its kind in the world. Last year, more than 50 million participated and the lights went out at the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Sydney Opera House and the Coliseum in Rome, just to name a few. Even Google's homepage went black for the day! In Israel, President Shimon Peres personally turned off lights in Tel Aviv. On Monday, the Board of Selectmen adopted a resolution adding Chelmsford to the list of cities and towns around the world participating in this event. If you go to http://www.earthhourus.org/map.php you will find Chelmsford among the participating communities.

This year, Earth Hour will be even bigger-already 250 cities in 74 countries have agreed to take part including Atlanta, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami and Nashville with more signing up every day. Around the world cities like Moscow, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Shanghai and Mexico City will turn out their lights. Insurance Woes

Why is it that things that seem easy always turn out to be difficult? We strongly believe in not reinventing the wheel and so we looked at the applications and rules for other markets in our area. We discovered that some of the markets require vendors to be insured and others don't. Some markets ask for a specific dollar amount of insurance, others don't. To be on the safe side we frankly used the same criteria as another market. We immediately got some negative feedback.

Because we are new at this and we want to be farmer friendly, we did ask for comments. In the meantime we contacted the Massachusetts Farmers Market Association to find out what their guidelines are regarding insurance. It turns out that case law has conclusively determined that farmers' markets are associations, even if there is no formal organization. Because they are deemed to be associations, the vendors are jointly and severally liable for the negligence of any vendor. This means if someone is injured because of the negligence of one vendor, all the rest will be held liable. Ugh! Our market will be insured, but we need to look out for our vendors. If we don't require insurance, then the insured vendors will be paying for those without insurance. The MFMA guidelines require all farmers to be insured and all vendors of prepared foods to carry $1M. I am willing to bet that the vendors and markets that don't require insurance don't know the risk they are taking.

We knew there would be a few rocks in the road (this is New England afterall!) and we hope once everyone is educated about the liability issue they will understand why insurance is necessary.

The Harvest New England Conference was FANTASTIC!

Yesterday Peggy and Susan drove out to Sturbridge to attend the Harvest New England agricultural conference. We were overwhelmed by the information available to "Market Masters" and farmers. The best part was meeting the wonderful people who grow our food and give of their time to bring farmers' markets to their communities. Everyone was willing to share with us and we were amazed at the number of people who came up to us and said, "You can do it. Don't be afraid. You won't fail. Your market will be great!" The Editor and Publisher of edible Boston said, "I will visit your market."

The second best part is that we found out that we have been doing all the right things to prepare for Chelmsford's market. We came home truly brimming with ideas about how to make the market a great experience for everyone.

The Butcher, the Baker, the Candlestick Maker

February is upon us and we are still working on the final application and rules, but we are starting to get calls and messages from interested vendors. A baker contacted Peggy yesterday and another farmer we didn't know found us and asked how to participate. Although we don't have anyone yet who sells fresh meat or poultry, we do know of a bee keeper who makes candles and hope we will be able to attract them (see the title of this post!).

Peggy and Susan will be attending a conference in Sturbridge later this month to learn more about running Farmers' Markets. More on that when we return.

One day closer to spring...

It has been well below freezing for the past few days, but the seed, plant and garden catalogs have started to arrive, so that means spring is on the way. In Chelmsford and the the surrounding towns, Parlee's Strawberries are never far from our thoughts. We are so happy that Parlee's will be selling strawberries, among other things, at the Chelmsford Farmers Market. Click on the photo and you will go to their site. The Chelmsford Farmers' Market is in its final planning stages and the Market Committee is champing at the bit to start sending out the applications to our local farmers. Peggy and Susan presented the draft rules and regulations to the Board of Selectmen last week, answered their questions and received some helpful comments. We have had a lot of positive feedback and we are pleased the Town Manager and BOS are supportive.

Our goal is to give the residents of Chelmsford a place to purchase local produce and support local farmers. Stay tuned to learn more about becoming a locavore!
